About Bedford New Hampshire
With more than 21,000 residents, Bedford is located in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Just minutes from Manchester-the state's largest city-Bedford residents can maintain a suburban lifestyle with all the benefits of a large city right in their backyard. Before becoming an incorporated settlement in 1750, Massachusetts established Bedford in 1733 as "Narragansett, No. 5" as a haven for soldiers fighting against the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island. The town was named after Lord Russell, who was the Fourth Duke of Bedford as well as the Secretary of State for the Southern Department. There are a handful of famous people who come from Bedford, including comedians Seth Meyers and Sarah Silverman, Judge Peter Woodbury, Segway inventor Dean Kamen, and MLB pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals Chris Carpenter. There are six grade schools located in Bedford, including Memorial Elementary School, McKelvie Intermediate School, Lurgio Middle School, and Bedford High School. Part of Saint Anselm College is also located in Bedford.
